Massage Therapy
Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone and the traditions — Thai, Ayurvedic, remedial. The most regulated pathway.

Massage is the treatment most spas sell most of, and the pathway with the most regulation and the best labour statistics. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects massage therapist employment to grow 15% between 2024 and 2034 — much faster than average — with a median wage of $57,950 (BLS). Every market we cover has more spa jobs for massage therapists than trained people to fill them.
Licensing by market
United States: state licence, typically 500–1,000 hours and the MBLEx exam. Canada: registered massage therapist (RMT) status in BC, Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and PEI after roughly 2,200 hours; unregulated elsewhere. UK: Level 3 Diploma (ITEC/VTCT) is the employer norm. Thailand: Ministry of Public Health certificates for Thai massage and massage-for-health. India: no licence; institute certificate and practical log. Australia: Diploma of Remedial Massage for health-fund rebates.
The route
Anatomy, physiology, massage theory and contra-indications online in the Spa Therapist Foundation; hands-on hours at a partner school — including, in Thailand and India, schools teaching the traditional systems. Where a licence requires more hours than a partner school offers, we say so and name the regulator-approved route.
Where it leads
Day and hotel spas, clinics, cruise ships (the largest recruiter of multi-skilled therapists), Gulf hotel spas, sports and remedial practice. Read the work-abroad guides before you sign with a recruiter.

Questions
Is Thai massage training in Thailand recognised abroad?
As a skill, everywhere; as a licence, only in Thailand. Hotels in the Gulf and cruise lines recruit Thai-trained therapists and then train them to their own protocols.
How long to job-ready?
Six to twelve months in unregulated markets; one to two years where a state or provincial licence applies.
