Studying in the Gulf

Studying spa and beauty in the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia: KHDA-licensed training centres, municipality premises licensing, health cards, student and employment visas, costs, and how partner schools in Dubai and Doha work with the Institute.

Studying in the Gulf

The Gulf trains fewer therapists than it employs; most arrive qualified from South and Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. Studying there is possible — Dubai's KHDA licenses private training centres, and municipality-approved academies run beauty and massage courses — but it is expensive and the visa is the constraint: a training centre cannot sponsor a residence visa the way a university can. Most people study at home, gain a year's experience, and arrive on an employer's visa.

If you are already there

Residents on a family or employment visa can study at partner academies in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha. Certificates from recognised institutes are checked when an employer applies to change your visa to a spa role; keep the originals and attested copies.

Costs and rules

Academy fees in the UAE run several times Indian or Thai fees; premises must hold a municipality licence and staff a health card. Massage in the Gulf is licensed as a spa activity with strict rules on premises and dress; a reputable partner academy will explain them before you enrol.

The better route for most

Qualify at home through a partner school, work a year in a hotel spa, then read working in Gulf hotel spas. Manager-level courses for people already in the region are on the Institute of Spa Management's UAE page.

Questions

Can a training centre sponsor my visa?

In the UAE, generally no — only licensed universities and colleges sponsor student visas. Check the current rule with the academy and the immigration authority; it changes.
