Cruise ship spas

How cruise ship spa jobs really work: the concession operators who hire, contracts of six to nine months, commission-based pay, cabin sharing, the multi-skilled therapist profile, retail targets and how to spot a fake recruiter.

Cruise ship spas

Cruise lines do not run their own spas; specialist concession operators do, and they are the largest single recruiters of multi-skilled spa therapists in the world. Contracts run six to nine months, therapists share cabins, pay is largely commission on services and retail, and the work is relentless — sea days can mean ten treatments. It is also the fastest way for a newly qualified therapist to see the world, bank money and learn to sell. Here is how it works, without the recruiter's gloss.

Who hires and what they want

Concession operators recruit through their own portals and through agencies in the Philippines, India, South Africa, the UK and Eastern Europe. They want multi-skilled therapists (massage, facials, body), a recognised certificate, one to two years' experience preferred, fluent English, a valid passport with at least a year to run, and a medical.

Pay and conditions

A small base plus commission on treatments and retail, so income depends on the ship, the itinerary and your selling; retail targets are real and are enforced. Accommodation and food are provided; cabins are shared; days off are rare at sea. Contracts end with a flight home and, if you performed, an invitation back.

The recruiter test

Legitimate recruiters never charge the candidate a placement fee, never ask for money for a "visa" or "medical" before an offer, and can name the operator and the ship. Anyone who does otherwise is not a recruiter. The network's jobs board on SpaOpportunities.in lists only employers and agencies that agree to this.

Preparation

Qualify through the spa therapist pathway, get a year in a busy spa, learn to retail without embarrassment, and get your documents attested before you apply.

Questions

Do I need a licence?

The operator's certificate requirements matter more than any national licence, because the ship is not in any state. A recognised Level 3 or equivalent plus experience is the norm.

How much can I earn?

Operators publish ranges; we do not repeat them because they depend on commission. Ask the recruiter for the last three contracts' average on the ship you are offered.
