Maldives and island resorts
Working in resort spas in the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, Bali and the Caribbean: live-in island contracts, staff villages, pay with service charge, the therapist profile resorts hire, and what to ask before signing.

A Maldives resort is an island with one hotel on it, and its spa is staffed by therapists who live there for a year at a time. The same model runs in the Seychelles, Mauritius, parts of Bali and the Caribbean. It is beautiful, well paid by service charge in good resorts, and isolating; the therapists who thrive are the ones who knew what they were signing.
The profile resorts hire
Multi-skilled therapists with a signature style — Balinese, Thai, Ayurvedic — and confident English; supervisors with hotel-spa experience; the occasional yoga or wellness practitioner. Resorts recruit from Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and the Philippines through agencies and their own HR.
Pay and life
Base salary plus a share of the resort's service charge, which in luxury resorts can exceed the base; accommodation in a staff village, meals, flights, medical. One island, one bar, one beach, for twelve months. Ask about the staff village, internet, days off and how often a boat goes to the capital.
Preparation
The spa therapist pathway, a traditional style learned at a partner school in Thailand, India or Bali, and a year's spa experience. Resorts and retreats are guided on SpasSriLanka.com, SpasIndonesia.com and SpasIndia.net.
Questions
How long are contracts?
Usually one year, renewable; leaving early can forfeit the flight home.
Is service charge guaranteed?
No — it is a share of what the resort collects. Ask for the last twelve months' average per therapist in writing.
